Child Abuse
Child Abuse – Next: Grooming Environment
(Note: The focus of this initiative is on CSA [child sexual abuse]. Physical and emotional abuse will be included later on.)
This is not intended to be a primer on CSA. There is a wealth of information available on this subject. This is intended to inform on the reasons for the prevalence of CSA among Jehovah’s Witnesses, as well as the weaknesses in Watch Tower Society policies in dealing with instances of CSA.
(Excellent CSA prevention tips can be found at: https://www.scarymommy.com/expert-tips-keeping-your-child-safe-sexual-abuse/ )
Sexual assault has an impact unlike any other crime. There is an impact upon the victim / survivor that often has life-long effects. In addition, there is a significant impact upon society. (See: https://www.inspq.qc.ca/en/sexual-assault/understanding-sexual-assault/consequences )
The vast majority, 90 percent, of CSA victims / survivors had known the attacker prior to the abuse having started.
There is often a process followed by attackers that is termed “grooming.” “Grooming not only involves the manipulation of the intended victim, but also the child’s parents and the community at large.” [1]
Some of the key elements of grooming include:
- “Victim Selection – The first stage of sexual grooming often involves selecting a victim. Studies have found that victims are often selected due to their perceived physical attractiveness, ease of access, or perceived vulnerability. Children who may have less parental supervision are at particular risk. Further, child molesters may also target children who have low self-esteem, low confidence, or who may be unduly trusting or naïve. Sandusky, for example, worked with at-risk youth who lived in single-parent homes.” [2]
- Gaining Access – predators position themselves where they can be in contact with minors without suspicion
- Trust Development
- Desensitizing – Engaging in physical contact, such as hugs, snuggles, wrestling, and tickling. Discussing sexual behaviour and content.
